Carn Brea Leisure Centre, based in Pool, Redruth has announced the appointment of local building contractor, RG Kellow, to oversee a £200k investment to expand and improve its health & fitness facilities.

The local firm, which was established in 2007 and is located only 200 metres from the centre, has now started work on the project that will see the gym expand in size by a third, to a massive 400 square metres, and the changing rooms double in size and receive a complete makeover.

The works are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year with the new and improved areas open to the public in the New Year.

Alex Clifton, the Trust’s Chief Operating Officer, said:

“We are delighted to have partnered with RG Kellow. We were really impressed with their professional approach and commitment to securing the contract and they also met our criteria of being located locally, ensuring the economic value of the project was shared within our community.”

Robert Kellow, Managing Director at RG Kellow, added:

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with such a significant organisation on this exciting project. Carn Brea Leisure Centre has been at the heart of our community, employees and their families for generations and we are all looking forward to seeing the finished result”

Following the set back of last year’s land sale falling through, the gym expansion project forms the first step of a refreshed re-development strategy the Trust has put in place to enhance the centre’s facilities.

Mr Clifton, commented:

“The Board of Trustees and management team have been working hard behind the scenes to put together a sustainable re-investment plan that delivers a better facility for the community and I’m delighted that we’ve reached the first stage of what is shaping up to be an exciting few years.”

During the works, the gym will be temporarily relocated, meaning that although there will be some minor disruption, the health & fitness facilities will remain open for its users to enjoy as normal.
